A Driving Force

A Driving Force

“What Is Your WHY?”

Why do you get up every morning?

Why do you try so hard?

Why do you care?

Boil the answers to these questions down to one or two words, or a simple phrase. Mine happens to be “To help others”. Let this WHY inform everything you do; from small goals you set and basic decisions you make, to major financial planning and long term commitments. Your WHY has a name- many names actually- Passion, Dedication, Commitment, Drive…

A WHY is a driving force that encourages you to achieve and guides you on your path. This force informs every decision you make and the usefulness of the results. Consequences are assigned a value based on your WHY and how they relate to it individually. Even the simplest of things in your daily life can both influence your WHY and also be influenced by it. It is a core belief of mine that actions speak volumes when words speak chapters. When we choose to invest time, effort, and money into an idea (or an object, or a person, or anything) we are constructing foundational pieces of our WHY, our purpose, our mission. Our choice to invest our limited resources into anything constitutes an action. These driven actions revolve around our WHY because most of what we do consciously is intended to be productive and generate a feeling of success and accomplishment.

Success can be defined as accomplishments on the road to your WHY. There is no destination- just a path, a direction. Every step you take towards accomplishing your mission is another success. These WHYs are important to our survival. They provide a sense of belonging and fulfillment- higher ranked needs on Maslow’s Hierarchy; but needs nonetheless. Let your WHYs drive. It is their job. Drive you to better and more. Drive you with Determination. Drive you with Commitment. Drive you to Success.

What is your WHY?

Why do you try so hard?

Why do you care?

Ramblings of Dragons

Today, I am talking about a subject very near and dear to my heart. Dragons.

I won't bore you with details of my beliefs. Suffice it to say that dragons are spirits that enter our lives when they feel we need them and may or may not leave if they see necessary.

Several months ago, mine wandered into my life quietly accompanying a new individual I was associating with at the time. This person and I fell in love and our dragons connected. His is much older and stronger than mine because she is a new hatchling. He and his dragon have been together for aeons and many lifetimes together. For a time, we believed we were meant to be together.

I am a believer that everything happens for a reason. I am also a believer that if it is meant to be, your free-will decisions will not affect the end result; it will be as it should be. Circumstances in his life have made our connection a little more distant than we would like. Guenevire has been a great help to me recently and she loves him and his dragon as well. She also understands that maybe we are at the wrong time and place and she has helped me move on from that hurt.

We are confident that if the four of us are meant to be involved in each others lives, we will be ultimately bonded forever and find our ways back to each other if we should. My next tattoo will be Guenevire holding the essence of Air and offering it to him standing behind me. Drake, we love you.

Recap, Review, Refocus.

First, an apology. I have few followers but those of you appreciated souls who keep up with me have noticed that I have not been around AT ALL in a very long time. I apologize for my absence. It is inexcusable, and hopefully I can use this point in my life to reevaluate and refocus my energy.

Now, at this point in my life, there is a lot going on but I will briefly recap. I moved to Baltimore very soon after Thanksgiving last year to start my second REAL job after leaving college with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management. I am an assistant store manager at a casual dining restaurant store chain. I moved nearly 6 hours from every single person I have ever known to take an opportunity that should have catalyzed my entire career.

Well it did. Just not the way I expected it to do so. I am looking back on my hard-considered choice and decided in hindsight that it was a bad decision; not the wrong one, just not the best one. Not a decision based in my best interests. Some things have changed, including the management structure I was introduced to; and now I am uncertain and relatively uncomfortable with the way things are going. Unfortunately, I have no choice at this juncture but to ride it out and make better decisions from this point forward.

Currently, I am considering options, utilizing my social support structure and attempting to make my position as useful as possible while I decide on my next course of action. As I do so, I am attempting to restructure my personal life as much as possible to maximize my happiness and productivity (as well as my lifetime passion of learning) until a major life change becomes imminent.

Tabling until a major change in which I *hopefully* get to move home and restart in a direction that is more beneficial to me and my goals, I intend to make the most of my situation both financially and personally. I continue to learn professionally as I contemplate my next move, and I make attempts to learn nonprofessional information to help me grow as a person.

"At times you need to lose sight of the goals to concentrate on the steps one-by-one in order to move forward in a positive direction. "         ~Me
There is no single way to achieve success; no one path towards the end goal. The matter is in the journey-the travels of the individual- which is the important part of being successful.

Unforgettable!

I just finished reading the Tiger's Curse series penned by Colleen Houck. Fantastic set, let me tell you.

Colleen wrote a set of books that had two main paths, the "journey" the characters were on and the "romantic" aspect that is in most books I enjoy!

When I first finished them, I felt like something was missing because Colleen remains more PG and does not explore the romantic aspect as in-depth as I prefer. After some quiet meditation, I realized that I would not have been happy if the situation were reversed and she spent more time on the romantic aspect than the journey. So, here I am in the middle of the perfect problem.

The reason I share this story is because, had Colleen chosen and managed to write these books and concentrate fully on both pieces to this very delectable puzzle, she would have fallen by the wayside like so many before her. The books would have conformed to others and they would have sounded exactly the same as all the books I have been reading for over a decade.

She was smart about this. She made it so that those looking for the journey got it and those looking for romance got some of it; just enough to keep them interested and enjoying the book.

My point is, it was a great read and Colleen Houck has met the standards I keep on my wall at home:

"Never settle for being MEMORABLE when you could be UNFORGETTABLE"

Colleen and her world of characters I fell in love with will be unforgettable because she did not meet my standards for perfect enjoyment. Memorable would have been the case if she had woven more romanticism into these Tiger-themed books than she did; and I appreciate the challenge these books provided to me.

Happy Reading All!
What do you like to read? Do you have any suggestions for me?

Short Trips are fun Too!

This blog is dedicated to following dreams of travel and fulfillment in experiences. I believe this is a good time to share a few brief stories about my trips to the Renaissance Faire. Trips like that are fun, too. They can also be a great way to relax for just a day and have some fun by yourself or with some friends.

Queen Elizabeth and her Royal Court
I enjoy visiting the renaissance faire because I like to dress up and spend time with people who enjoy the same type of mythology and play-acting as I do. I usually go each year and each time I go, there are a few different people who go with me. When I first started going, my grandparents took me. Then, after a few years with my boyfriend, he decided he wanted to go with me. Let me just tell you some of the amusing and regular happenings when I visit the faire.

The first time we visited the faire, I was in proper attire and my boyfriend was not. Well, when we entered the park, we shopped some of the entrance stands and perused the outer perimeter. One of the pirates at the children's rides stopped us and advised me in all my wench's glory that my boyfriend MUST be a "virgin" because he was not dressed properly (jeans and a t-shirt). I was then told that I should lead him around and teach him exactly how to use his wallet at the faire. Later, we wandered over to watch the human chess match and sat down at the outer edge of the dungeon of tortures building. We watched about 2 minutes of the match and both of us fell asleep on the lawn.

Another time we went and spent the later part of our tour of the park watching the master forger at work. We were interested in how he teaches as he performs his work. It is obvious in watching him that he is very passionate and consumed by his work. He loves what he does and that makes him a happy man. Just watching this man work is worthy of posting on my blog.

A third time, I convinced my boyfriend that we should stay to watch the mounted joust. He had never seen one and I wanted him to see it. There were four champions and we sat on the side of evil (ironic, I thought since I am a wench and he could make a wonderful pirate). Our two champions wanted blood and the two opposing champions wanted valor and honor for the land and the queen.
The Four Champions

Short day trips like this, where even the drive is time spent with a friend or close loved one, can be more recreational than a whole week of vacation. Feel free to reach for those short and well-earned trips, as well as the long-term goals. Reach for the moon and you will always land among the stars.

If anyone has seen the movie Brave in theaters, there was a wonderful short movie about stars that relates well. Hope you have the chance to see it. Find a clip here and read the summary for the story line: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7doTbvCA2I .

The Renaissance Faire is a fun trip and if you live in Pennsylvania, it could be a short day trip for you!
